Steve Juno toured as Chubby Carrier's keyboard jammer before striking out on his own. With a debut release that's as far from zydeco as you can get, Juno's singer-songwriter outing is enveloped with a pop-rock sensibility and an occasional neo-jazz element.
Though his tunes are often melodic in a radio-ready sense, it's the lyrics that show the most promise with themes centering around individuality ("Different"), relationships ("Your World") and the anticipation of love ("Waiting For One Day"). Juno's protagonists are never completely happy; mostly they're disillusioned. Yet when love does arrive ("She's In Love"), the protagonist questions if he is indeed worthy of her affection. "Porno and Pizza" is mopier with a dejected lover succumbing to a solitary evening sentence of porno and pizza to escape a tortured reality. There's often a humorous intent, but that doesn't always connect given the edgy vocal delivery and arrangements often melding together into a homogenized blur.
Call it monsoon season music for those preferring the perpetual black cloud hovering overhead.
